Matt Lauer and Jimmy Fallon completely ignored the 800-pound gorilla in the room when Lauer appeared as a guest on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” Thursday evening.
The “gorilla” was “The Today Show” with all its current turmoil. Jimmy completely avoided asking Matt any questions about that — about newcomer Savannah Guthrie, about the show’s declining ratings and recent loss to rival “Good Morning America” on ABC, about Matt’s rumored role in ousting Ann Curry from the NBC show.
That’s the topic viewers likely believed would be raised by Fallon when he came face-to-face with Lauer. But instead, the two joked about Thursday’s Emmy nominations and Mike Tyson, who was the second guest on “Late Night” Thursday. They then talked seriously about the upcoming London Olympics, which was apparently the thing Lauer came on the show to promote.
The segment began with a sight gag — Lauer with a Maori tattoo on the left side of his face, like the one Mike Tyson has, only Lauer’s was temporary. Matt also walked in toting an Emmy statuette to honor the several nominations Fallon received on Thursday.
Despite the omission of any discussion about “Today,” most of the segment was light-hearted and fun. Still, you had to wonder: How on Earth could they avoid the “Today Show” mess? Who’s idea was that — Jimmy’s or Matt’s?
Whoever was responsible, you can watch what they did do, above.
