UPDATE: Even though E! claims “American Idol” has been talking about Adam Lambert possibly becoming a judge next season for over a month, that’s news to the Season 8 runner-up. But, he likes the sound of it.

“I’m just hearing about this today as well, and so, what a beautiful rumor. Listen, if – and I say ‘if’ with a capital I-F – if they were to approach me and if they were to say, ‘We want you to be a judge on the show,’ I would love that. I would jump at the chance,” Lambert told a U.K. radio station Monday. “I owe my career to American Idol. I mean, if it weren’t for American Idol, I doubt that … I would be sitting here with you … I think it would be really exciting to be sitting at a judging panel and trying to help people reach their dreams.”

Meanwhile, you can cross Katy Perry off the rumor list. The pop star says a TV gig is “not right for me.”

“People have reached out to me about the possibility of being involved, and it’s not right for me yet,” Perry tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s a real commitment to be on one of those shows. … I have ideas for two or three big, creative things, and I want to be able to fulfill those ideas.”

Could one of “American Idol‘s” most notorious alums return to the show … as a judge?

The long-running singing competition could be undergoing another overhaul and Season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert is rumored to be under consideration to join the judges’ table next season, according to E! News.

“They have been talking about Adam for over a month,” an unnamed source told E!. “He personifies the show, and will be a popular choice right from the start. He knows what it’s like to be on the receiving end of the judges’ comments, he has a human touch, and they know they can’t go wrong if they bring him on. He would be able to bring a unique perspective to the show. People love him.”

And some people also love to hate him, so either way, the show could benefit from the presence of Lambert, combined with his “been there, done that” “Idol” experience and his outrageous stage presence.

Whether the Lambert talks will develop into anything more than just talk is anyone’s guess at this point, but there likely will be another shake-up in the “AI” judging line-up. Not long after last season ended, Jennifer Lopez hinted that she may not be back for a third season.

Other names floating through the rumor mill in addition to Lambert include Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Fergie, Katy Perry and Will.I.Am.

“No one has signed any contracts yet and producers are currently putting out feelers and setting up meetings to see who they can get,” another insider told E!. “We won’t know if Randy [Jackson] and Steven [Tyler] are returning until they see who else is on board.”

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe commented on the musical judges chairs situation, saying, “Everything is up in the air … as of this moment in time, we are still in negotiations as we are with everybody.”

“There will be changes for sure,” he added, “but nothing that stops it from what it is, which is an out-and-out talent show.”

Season 12 of “Idol” premieres in January.
