“Smash” has a new “Dreamgirl” set to take the stage next season.
Jennifer Hudson is joining the cast of NBC’s musical drama for Season 2 in a multi-episode arc.
The singer-actress will play a Tony Award-winning Broadway star named Veronica Moore who impacts the lives of Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty).
“This series is a showcase for some of the best musical talent in the business and that’s a fitting description for Jennifer Hudson,” NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said. “Her character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it.”
Added executive producer Steven Spielberg: “First ‘Dreamgirls,’ now ‘Smash.’ I have no doubt Jennifer will continue to deliver even more inspiration to the audience responsible for giving us a second season on NBC.”
Hudson won an Oscar for her role in “Dreamgirls” and won a Grammy for her debut album.
“Smash” will now have two “American Idol” stars on board next season: Jennifer Hudson appeared on Season 3 of the Fox singing competition, while Katharine McPhee was a finalist on Season 5.
