A new competition series on NBC will bring yet another member of the Palin family to reality TV.

This time, it’s Todd Palin — rough-and-ready husband of Sarah and father of daughters Bristol, Willow and Piper, and sons Track and Trig.

And while all the Palins were seen in mom Sarah’s reality series on TLC, “Sarah Palin’s Alaska,” this new NBC series called “Stars Earn Stripes” represents the first time that dad Todd, 47, has struck out on his own in reality television.

The show, announced Tuesday by NBC, will premiere on Monday, Aug. 13, at 8/7c, taking over the Monday time slot from “America’s Got Talent,” which will either be in its final weeks, or ended already.

On “Stars Earn Stripes,” Todd Palin will be one of eight celebrities who will undertake fictional “missions” under the guidance of real-life military professionals (including retired Gen. Wesley Clark, who will host the show).

Or to put it more accurately, here’s how NBC’s announcement explained this unusual new reality competition series: “The eight competitors will gather at a remote training facility where they will tackle complicated and difficult missions that are inspired by real military exercises. Each will be paired with an ‘operative’ who is a member or a former member of our armed forces or law enforcement agencies. The operative will coach and guide their celebrity teammate on their training and each of their missions and will compete along-side them. From helicopter drops to long range weapons fire – the competitors will be tested physically and emotionally as they play to win and to earn a cash prize for military, veterans and first-responder based charities. Each week one of the teams will be eliminated.”

The other contestants are: actor Dean Cain (who once played Superman on TV), actor/former NFL’er Terry Crews, boxer Laila Ali (daughter of Muhammad Ali), TV personality Nick Lachey, skier Picabo Street, “Biggest Loser” trainer Dolvett Quince, and wrestling’s Eve Torres.

What’s Todd Palin’s qualification for taking part in this series? Well, in Alaska, he’s well-known for participating in the wide-ranging annual snowmobile race known as the Tesoro Iron Dog. In fact, he once had his arm broken during the race and still finished fourth.

Sarah Palin’s TLC reality series has long been over, but daughter Bristol is just getting started with her own reality series titled “Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp” (a reference to her son Tripp).

Coincidentally, Bristol’s show premieres tonight (June 19) at 10/9c on Lifetime.
