CNN is cancelling “John King, USA,” the 6 p.m. program that gave viewers a look at politics from both inside and outside Washington.

In its place, the cable network will extend Wolf Blitzer’s “The Situation Room” to three hours, beginning July 2.

King’s show will end on June 29 and then he will shift into the role of “lead campaign correspondent” and contribute to an array of CNN programs, including “The Situation Room” and Anderson Cooper’s “360.”

CNN president of U.S. operations Ken Jautz called the decision “a change we are making to bolster our political coverage heading into the critical stretch of the 2012 campaign,” according to The Wrap, who notes CNN suffered in May its worst primetime monthly ratings in 20 years.
