Gen. Colin Powell — soldier, statesman, and thought by many to be presidential timber (though it’s doubtful he’ll ever run) — paid a pre-Memorial Day weekend visit to “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” Friday night.

Leno saluted the U.S. Armed Forces with Powell, 75, plus a second military hero, Col. Greg Gadson, who lost both legs to a roadside bomb in Baghdad in 2007, but who is today a motivational speaker and, with the new movie “Battleship” in which he appears, a newly minted movie actor.

For his part, Gen. Powell was on the show to promote his new book, “It Worked for Me: Lessons in Leadership and Life.” Among other things, he explained to Jay why he never ran for president, even though he might have had a shot at winning it in 1994, when he was at the height of his popularity.
