Katherine Jenkins has excelled on “Dancing with the Stars” all season but on Monday night, the UK singer suffered a major wardrobe malfunction and had to dance with part of her costume stuck to her shoe.
After the show, she sighed to reporters, “It was a really weird night, a roller coaster! I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.”
It certainly was! On the show’s first-ever trio night — for which the couples were allowed to add a third dancer to their second performance – Katherine found herself almost tripped up by her costume. During her cha cha, Katherine’s partners Mark Ballas and Tristan MacManus stripped off her black secret agent pantsuit to reveal a sparkly dress. But the suit didn’t come off completely—and stuck to her foot until Katherine could kick it off.
“It was wrapped around my foot and underneath my foot and I just thought, ‘am I going to fall?’ But I had to carry on,” said Katherine, who bravely continued dancing.

“Mark choreographed an amazing routine which we just felt like we didn’t get to completely give 100 percent to because of the wardrobe malfunction. We don’t need something like that happening in a double elimination week but I hope the people at home could see that it’s something completely out of our hands. It’s a shame it wasn’t quite as it should have been.”
Still, Mark was pleased that “she carried on like a champ.”
The couple seemed perplexed about how the malfunction happened, though. “It was a onesie,” Mark told reporters about the costume. “It doesn’t make sense [how] it peeled off.” Katherine joked, “It’s like it was sabotage.” That seemed appropriate, given that the three were playing secret agents!
Despite the mishap, two judges gave them scores of 10 and Katherine and Mark wound up with a total score of 29. It was the night’s highest score for the three-way dances.
Watch a Quick Recap of Monday Night’s Performances:
“DWTS” costar Maria Menounos told xfinityTV the rest of the cast was horrified watching the wardrobe malfunction. “I’m like, Katherine, keep going! Keep going! And then when she kicked it off, I was like, oh, my God! How did she stand up? The thing was wrapped around her ankle, stuck in her heel!”
Here are some other competitors’ thoughts on an action-packed night, which included an individual dance as well as the trios:
Melissa Gilbert, who dances with Maksim Chmerkovskiy, joked that what was being called threesome night was “stimulating.” But seriously, the resilient underdog of Season 14 was thrilled backstage after getting praise Monday night from the judges for both of her dances. She told xfinityTV, “Do I feel like I definitely want to keep dancing and that I’ve got momentum now and that I feel accomplished? Yes, absolutely! There’s a confidence that came out on the dance floor, that light bulb that finally clicked in me. It’s a calmness and knowingness that hasn’t been there yet.”
Chelsie Hightower, who is training Roshon Fegan, was a major fan of the trios. She said, “We’ve done the same thing over and over so long at ‘Dancing with the Stars’ so it was so nice to have a switch up.”
Here’s Katherine and Mark’s First Dance of the Night:
Donald Driver told xfinityTV that he didn’t worry at all about pulling off his big trio dance move—dramatically jumping over partners Peta Murgatroyd and Karina Smirnoff to end their jive. “I did high jump,” the football player explained. “My highest height was 7’6 ½” and [Peta and Karina] aren’t that tall. I knew that I could climb and I just told Peta I need her shoulders, so don’t bend over. Stay straight up and I’ll do the rest.”
Maria called the threesome experiment on the show refreshing. “I think it’s a lot of fun, it brings a whole [new] energy, especially at the end of the season when you’re getting more stressed. You get a new person in, you’re like, ‘Oh, how fun! New person!” Ouch. Poor Derek Hough.
For those who think Maria and Derek are getting close off the dance floor as well as on, here’s another reason to think again. Maria revealed her boyfriend, Kevin Undergaro, was in the audience Monday night and the “Extra” hostess told reporters backstage, “He’s excited but nervous [for me]. He doesn’t want to be there because he gets so sick at the same time. [But] he’s very proud.”
