Jay Leno’s rare jibe at long-time late-night rival David Letterman came during a comedy bit Jay does from time to time on “The Tonight Show” called “What We Found on Ebay.”
The bit involves Jay introducing unusual items seen on the infamous auction Web site and asking his studio audience if they think the items were “sold” or “not sold.”
On Thursday’s show, the bit included a Chicken McNugget that a hopeful seller was auctioning off based on the tidbit’s supposed resemblance to Leno. The likeness was certainly debatable, as was the comparison Leno made to Letterman concerning another piece of food up for bidding on the Web site: A fried onion ring from a Red Robin restaurant on Houston (or so the seller averred). On Ebay, the bite-sized snack food was billed as an “evil onion ring” by virtue of the jack-o-lantern-like scowl that seemed to have formed on it during the deep-frying process.
Did this onion ring really look like Dave? As you’ll see in the above clip, Jay positioned a picture of Dave next to the “evil” onion ring for a head-to-head comparison. Which means: You can decide this one for yourself.
Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. and Katharine McPhee of NBC’s “Smash” were Jay’s guests on “Tonight” Thursday. Among other highlights, Jay showed a clip of Downey at age 5 in a movie directed by Downey’s father.
