Watch: Kimmel, Barbara Walters Clash over Jimmy’s ‘Tweet’ Joke

Jimmy Kimmel basked in the glory of his weekend stint as host and comedian-in-chief at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington.

The ABC late-night star gave a post-mortem on the star-studded event — attended by, among others, President Obama and wife Michelle — in his monologue Monday night on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

Among the moments Jimmy highlighted: The joke he made in his Correspondents Dinner monologue at Barbara Walters’ expense — a quip that poked fun at her well-known speech impediment, in which she seems to substitute a “w” sound for “r.” Jimmy’s joke — which you can hear in the clip, above — had to do with Barbara’s pronunciation of the word “tweet.”

As you’ll also see in the clip, Barbara was not amused. Indeed, she has long been sensitive to such treatment, which goes back at least as far as the late Gilda Radner lampooning her on “Saturday Night Live” in the 1970s in her infamous “Barbara Wawa” impersonations.

Barbara commented on the Kimmel quip Monday morning on “The View” (which is also in the above clip), and admitted she’s sensitive about the speech issue (not that it’s ever presented an obstacle to her hugely successful career in broadcasting).

Joy Behar, a life-long comedian, tried to comfort Barbara with these words of wisdom: “First of all, Barbara, you have to be mad only when they stop talking about you. It’s actually a compliment to make fun of people!”

Whether Barbara took that advice to heart remains to be seen, since Kimmel continued his assault on her speech difficulties in his monologue with this “apology”: “It was a little joke,” he said, directing his remarks directly to Walters. “And if it offended you, I’m vewy sowwy!”
