Rosie O’Donnell came out against Lindsay Lohan Tuesday morning on “The Today Show.” What was Lindsay’s crime? Agreeing to portray Elizabeth Taylor in an upcoming Lifetime TV movie (which was announced Monday).
And you might also ask: Why was Rosie O’Donnell commenting on this casting news in the first place? It’s because Matt Lauer asked what Rosie and fellow guests Star Jones and Donny Deutsch thought of Lindsay in the Liz role.
Well, as you’ll see in the clip, above, Rosie, whose latest talk show on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN cable channel was one of the TV season’s biggest flops, dumped all over Lindsay. “I feel very sorry for [Lohan],” Rosie said. “I think she needs a lot of time away … She’s had a lot of trouble doing every single movie, including ‘SNL.’ She was out and not in rehearsal. I think she’s not in a place to work.”
A few moments later, Rosie added: “I think the interest level in her has waned significantly.” For the record, Deutsch disagreed. He declared Lindsay to be “this generation’s Elizabeth Taylor” and pronounced the young actress fit to work.
All three of these commentators were on hand to take part in a segment the show calls “The Professionals,” in which these three “pros” were asked to give their opinions on a series of unrelated topics. The crucial issue of Lindsay Lohan’s casting in a TV movie was the nine-minute segment’s final subject.
Rosie was the newest addition to the “Today” show’s “Professionals” panel, and it remains to be seen if this will become a regular or even semi-regular gig for her.
One topic that never came up: “The View,” on which Star and Rosie both appeared. The two did not work together on “The View” (Star left in June 2006 and Rosie was on the show from September 2006-May 2007), but they each exited the show in very dramatic fashion.
