Tyra Banks has made her first public statement since cleaning house on her CW series “America’s Next Top Model.”

The supermodel defended her decision to fire all three members of the long-running show’s panel of experts — three colleagues who had been with the series since it began in 2003: Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander.

The axe fell last Friday. On Tuesday, the model turned hard-nosed producer was in New York at a Matrix Awards luncheon, where “Access Hollywood” caught up with her, according to this account on the Us Weekly Web site.

In a very brief interview, Tyra said of the firings: “We reached a point where we feel the show needs a new boost.” Indeed, the series will embark on its 18th cycle this fall.

There’s no word yet on who Tyra will pick as the trio’s replacements.
