Renegade writer-producer Kurt Sutter is launching an unscripted “Outlaw” series for the Discovery Channel, the network announced Tuesday.

Discovery has ordered six episodes of “Outlaw Empires” from Sutter (creator of FX’s critically acclaimed “Sons of Anarchy“), who will appear on-camera and executive produce the series, which he says “will make ‘Sons of Anarchy’ look like ‘Sesame Street.’”

Through its “no-holds-barred accounts,” the series examines and profiles real-life crime organizations including, of course, outlaw bikers, gangs such as the Crips, the Irish Mob, the Italian Mob, a Latin American crime dynasty and the Aryan Brotherhood.

“I’ve made a career writing about fictitious anti-heroes,” Sutter tells Entertainment Weekly. “To create these worlds, I’ve spent a lot of time with active members on both sides of the law. And if I had to pick the most interesting of the two, the choice is obvious — we all love the guys in black.”

“Outlaw Empires” debuts May 14 at 10/9c on Discovery.
