Damon and Elena shippers, this week’s episode of the “Vampire Diaries” (“Heart of Darkness”) is dedicated to you. In fact, Rose (Lauren Cohan) journeys back from the dead to proclaim herself Team Delena and quote liberally from message boards about Delena versus Stelena. It all starts when Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) decide, with Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) blessing, to travel to Denver and pick up Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) , since Klaus (Joseph Morgan) now knows where he is. They hope he can use his powers to talk to the dead to get Rose to reveal who sired her. (Rose sired Katherine, who sired both Salvatores.) Their goal is to learn which Original they are descended from so they can assure themselves that killing Klaus with the white oak stake will not results in the deaths of any Salvatores. They find Jeremy at a batting cage with his new friend Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic). Every time Damon messes with Jeremy’s mind, the poor boy loses a few dozen I.Q. points. After Kol uses Damon’s head for batting practice, Damon manages to knock him out with a non-white oak stake. The trio retreats to a motel to regroup. The word motel is practically a synonym for sex, but they are more focused on conjuring up Rose. After proclaiming herself at peace, Rose tells Jeremy, apropos of nothing, that she wants Damon and Elena to get together — and that she was sired by Mary Porter, not an Original. So now the question is who sired Mary?
Damon and Elena contemplate this important question by lying in the same bed. Damon reveals that he never told her that he gave Rose a day of happiness before she died, because he did not want her to have high expectations of him. They hold hands until Elena pulls away. He follows her outside the room and they have a big, passionate make-out session. Delena fans cheer. Stelena fans take their protests to Twitter. Before they can use the motel bed for its intended purpose, Jeremy interrupts with the news that he has located Mary in Kansas. Judging from the expression on his face, he is not on board the Delena ship. When they reach Mary’s house, Kol has already killed her. He will not reveal whether he sired Mary — and why would he if he wants to live? He beats Damon up again. After he leaves, Damon asks Elena what they’re doing. She admits that she is not sure how she feels. He accuses her of hoping that he screws up so she can be appalled by him and avoid having to make a difficult decision. She acknowledges that he is the king of self-sabotage. He angrily says that he is not going to make it easy for her this time. She’s going to have to figure it out for herself. Well, I’m sure being a total jerk about Elena’s legitimate concerns will win her over, Damon. In the car, Rose’s ghost muses to Jeremy that Damon challenges Elena while Stefan’s love is pure and good and made of sparkly unicorns. She thinks Damon will be the best or worst thing that ever happens to her. Post it to a fan site, Rose.
Back in Mystic Falls, Stefan needs to bring out Ric’s (Matt Davis) evil alter ego so that they can find out where he hid the white oak stake. Ultimately, Ric has to take off his ring and allow Stefan to beat him within an inch of his life. The ring is in the witches cave, where no vampire can get to it.
Tyler (Michael Trevino) returns home. He has a romantic reunion with Caroline (Candice Accola), until he discovers that Klaus drew a horse for her. Despite Caroline’s insistence that she has no interest in Klaus, Tyler leaves in a jealous huff.
Esther (Alice Evans) returns, and Tells Rebekah (Claire Holt) she is dying. They hold hands until she collapses on the floor, dead. When evil Ric retrieves the white oak stake in the cave, he is stunned that Rebekah has followed him inside. She tells him that she wants him to kill all the Originals. It’s not Rebekah — it’s Esther who has taken over her body! Tune in next week to find out how Esther pretending to be Rebekah feels about Delena!
