“Law & Order: SVU” returned from hiatus last night with some major developments for Det. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay).
Case in point: Benson’s past came back to haunt her, and exposed her darker side, when an eight-year-old case resurfaced (along with Andre Braugher’s Bayard Ellis) in which it was revealed Olivia had coerced a rape confession out of an innocent man.
After exonerating the wrongfully convicted and catching the real bad guy, it was the fallout from Benson’s botched job that imposed the real consequences for our top lady cop. The implementation of a new Internal Affairs-type unit — led by Olivia’s secret lover ADA Haden (Harry Connick Jr.), who’s now tasked with reviewing her former cases to ensure conviction integrity. That conflict of interest posed too much a threat to their careers and effectively ended their relationship, which was nearly exposed by Ellis during the episode.
“Law & Order: SVU” airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
