Melissa Gilbert didn’t appear on Tuesday night’s “Dancing with the Stars” after suffering a mild concussion and whiplash during her Monday dance. But the “Little House on the Prairie” actress and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy survived elimination [Sherri Shepherd left instead] —and backstage after the show, Maks updated reporters on Melissa’s condition.
The celebrity hit her head on the ballroom floor while doing the paso doble with Maks and was rushed to the hospital. But Tuesday night, Maks said, “She’s at home. She had her doctor come visit. They re-viewed the dance; they picked out [the moment] when she hit it. It’s a big deal for Melissa not because [she’s] trying to make a big deal [of it but] because she has a metal fusion, fused spine in her neck as well as her lower back, so that was a big scare.” As Melissa told fans on the show last week, she broke her back in 2010 while doing “Little House on the Prairie: The Musical.”

In addition, Melissa’s head hit Maks’ leg during their dance. “When I heard that she took my leg out with her head—I’m a big guy and I’ve rarely been bothered by something like this,” Maks fretted. “We [dancers] know how to keep ourselves on our feet; we’re very grounded so for her to take me out, it must have been a big deal, so I’m worried about her neck.”
The other cast members were also concerned about Melissa. Dancer Mark Ballas said, “It’s probably a good idea she took today off. Concussions are a serious thing. You have to watch that, and especially here [on elimination night], with the added stress factor. No one wants to have a concussion and go through the waiting game.”
His partner, singer Katherine Jenkins, told Xfinitytv, “she texted me—not during the show but last night. She said she was expecting to be sore today. We all just want to wish her well and a speedy recovery.”
Disney star Roshon Fegan, who dances with Chelsie Hightower, said it’s easy to get injured during the grueling competition. “You never know when it’s going to happen. You really have to make sure after every dance that you kind of check yourself out. Check yourself — before you wreck yourself!”
