As he has for many years, Jay Leno has begun welcoming the “American Idol” cast-offs on to “The Tonight Show” on Friday nights, after they’ve been voted off.

The appearances come during Leno’s opening monologue. On Friday’s show, he introduced DeAndre Brackensick, 17, who was voted off “Idol” on Thursday night.

Jay asked him how he felt when he was voted off, since he had seemed like a favorite to go farther in the competition. “I was kind of shocked,” the teen said politely. “I thought I had one of my best performances [this] week.”

After their short chat, Brackensick joined Rickey Minor and the Tonight Show Band to sing.

Also on Friday’s “Tonight Show”: Kristen Chenoweth and animal expert Julie Scardina (with animals).
