Slap-happy funnyman Will Sasso scored a couple of bull’s-eyes Friday night when he impersonated both Jay Leno and David Letterman in an interview with Leno on “The Tonight Show.”
The dual Dave and Jay impersonations came in Part One of Sasso’s appearance with Leno — his first-ever sitdown on the fabled late-night show (though he had been an uncredited player in comedy bits years earlier).
Sasso came on the show to promote the upcoming (and long-awaited) movie “The Three Stooges,” the film-making Farrelly brothers’ modern-day update of the classic, comic trio. Sasso plays Curly, Sean Hayes plays Larry and Chris Diamantopoulos plays Moe in the movie, which gets released Friday, April 13.
Sasso told a hilarious story about growing up in Vancouver as the son of Italian immigrants, to the delight of Leno, whose father was Italian. Sasso then talked about his five seasons with “Mad TV,” and a sketch the show had once contemplated but never did: A scenario in which Leno’s “Tonight Show” and Letterman’s “Late Show” had somehow merged to become one show, with both hosts, and their bands and guests, on one stage at the same time.
In the proposed sketch, Sasso was to have played Dave and master mimic Frank Caliendo was to have played Jay. On “The Tonight Show” on Friday, Sasso took on both roles. And of the two impersonations, his Leno impression was more savage than his Dave — at least to our ears. Jay was a great sport, though.
Then, before you could exclaim, “Why, you!”, Sasso and Leno were on to a discussion of the upcoming “Stooges” movie, and also showed a clip that showed these updated Stooges in fine form as they wreaked havoc at a “society” soiree. Also in the scene: Sofia Vergara — hilarious as usual.
As usual, we have the entire “Tonight Show” from Friday night too, with guests Nicole Richie and Sasso.
