“Hollywood Squares” is getting a hip new version, a hip-hop version to be exact.
MTV2 announced plans to revamp the classic game show with an updated version called “Hip Hop Squares” that “stays true to the tic-tac-toe format of the original game show, while infusing it with some of the biggest and most charismatic personalities in Hip Hop culture today.”
Some of the celebs filling in the new tic-tac-toe board include “America’s Got Talent” host Nick Cannon, “Jackass” star Bam Margera and singer-songwriter Kat Graham. Peter Rosenberg, a New York hip-hop DJ, will host the show.
The network’s head of programming, Paul Ricci, promises “a fun, dynamic series that’s unpredictable, heavy on personality and much more ‘party’ than ‘game show’.”
The game show has existed in various incarnations; the original series hosted by Peter Marshall ran on NBC from 1966-1981. A syndicated version was put into production from 1986-1989 (with Joan Rivers as the permanent center square); it was then revived again a decade later with “DWTS” dance master Tom Bergeron as host and featuring Whoopi Goldberg as the permanent center square, airing from 1998-2004.
“Hip Hop Squares” will premiere on Tuesday, May 22 at 11/10c.
