The Thursday Buzz: Chris Elliott Gets Flour Bombed and More

Will Ferrell wasn’t the first guy to show up on talk shows in character, doing conceptual comedy bits; Chris Elliott has been doing it for 30 years. Not that Chris was the first one, but he did perfect the art of showing up at random on the old “Late Night with David Letterman” as all sorts of odd characters, like the guy who lived under the audience bleachers.

Now that he’s a star in his own right, he still is game for anything when he appears on Dave’s show. This time, he showed up on the¬† “Late Show” covered in flour, claiming he was flour bombed, Kim Kardashian-style, backstage. No one can feign annoyance like Chris, but Dave upped the ante when he sent Chris over to stage manager Biff Henderson to clean up, and Biff doused him with a hose. And even though Elliott is a dripping, gluey mess in a freezing studio, he had no problems sitting back down next to Dave (on a tarp) and promoting the new season of his Adult Swim show “Eagleheart.”

Oh, and bonus points to Paul Shaffer for having the band play “Stand” from R.E.M. when Chris came out; it was the theme song to Elliott’s early ’90s short-lived (but much loved) sitcom “Get A Life.”
