“Extra” co-host Maria Menounos suffered the first “Dancing With the Stars” injury of the season. And she explained to reporters backstage after Monday night’s show with partner Derek Hough how it all happened.
“Somewhere in the first week I ripped the intercostal muscles off my rib doing a dip,” Maria said. “A couple of days later, I fell on his knee twice and broke them.
“We didn’t want to talk about it. Even in rehearsals we didn’t want to talk about it, but there were moments when I’d scream or wince in pain,” the perpetually perky TV star said.
When asked if she had seen a doctor, Maria said, “Oh, yeah. We got some peeps helping out. We’re good.”
But her dancer Derek admitted the injury was a worry: “I was like, I don’t know if we can do this at all because when she breathed, she has to breathe like [imitated gasping noise] because of her ribs. But she found a way of getting things done. We tried to keep it under wraps because we didn’t want to be that couple where we come out of the gate with something negative.”
Maria confirmed, “This is the last time we’re talking about it!”
Derek said, “We want to be positive and have fun, because that’s who we are. We’re having such a great time.”
