'The Muppets' (Walt Disney Home Entertainment)

The Muppets

When an evil oil man discovers black gold beneath Muppet Theater, Kermit recruits a Muppet super-fan and his two best friends to help gather up the gang for a telethon that will save the venue from being razed and replaced with a giant oil pump in the new blockbuster ‘The Muppets.’ Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) never met an oil field he couldn’t suck dry. So when Tex discovers a bountiful reservoir right underneath Muppet Theater, he begins drawing up plans to claim the land and start drilling. Little does Tex realize that devoted Muppets fan Walter is currently in Los Angeles with his best friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams), and that he’s not about to let one man’s greed spoil a good thing for everyone. With Kermit by their side, Walter, Gary, and Mary hatch a plan to put on a big telethon that will help them raise the ten million dollars needed to keep Muppet Theater standing. But rounding up the gang won’t be easy, because these days Miss Piggy’s got a posh job at Vogue Paris; Fozzie has landed a gig at a Reno casino; Gonzo has become the owner of a successful plumbing company; and Animal is dealing with anger management issues in a Santa Barbara clinic. With the drilling deadline fast drawing near and Tex wringing his hands in anticipation, the gang races to put on the performance of a lifetime and save Muppet Theater from certain destruction. Directed by James Bobin and written by Segel and Nicholas Stoller, The Muppets Movie features cameos by Zach Galifianakis, Billy Crystal, Jack Black, Alan Arkin, and Jean-Claude Van Damme, among others. Tarzan

Premiering on NBC in 1966, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ immortal creation, ‘Tarzan,’took to the nation’s TV screens for the first time. Still in the capable hands of producer Sy Weintraub, the TV Tarzan (Ron Ely) continued the more recent (and more authentic) interpretation of Lord Greystoke as a sophisticated, articulate jungle adventurer as seen in the Tarzan films of Gordon Scott, Jock Mahoney and Mike Henry. Also carried over from the big screen was young actor Manuel Padilla (Tarzan and the Valley of Gold, Tarzan and the Great River), now playing the jungle lord’s kid sidekick alongside Cheetah, the simian one. The first half of his inaugural season finds Tarzan rescuing seeing-eye lions, endangered leopards, and pampered princes while battling man-eaters, despots and deadly arachnids in this 4-Disc, 15-Episode collection. Guest stars include former Tarzan Jock Mahoney, Star Trek’s Nichelle Nichols, Woody Strode, and Russ Tamblyn. Ron Ely continues his memorable run as Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan in the second half of his first season. This 16-Episode, 4-Disc collection sees the Lord of the Jungle and his stalwart second bananas, Jai the jungle boy (Manuel Padilla) and Cheetah the chimp, facing off against some of their most formidable challenges alongside a bevy of powerhouse performer guest stars. Stage and screen legend Julie Harris makes her first appearance as the imperiled, imperious missionary Charity Jones and Maurice Evans makes his memorable debut as Sir Basil Bertram. And the action continues to heat up with volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, phantom dinosaurs and more fantastic jungle menaces. Adding their talents to the drama and the dangers are Susan Oliver, Chips Rafferty, Gia Scala, Sally Kellerman and Jack Elam. Buy the Season 1, Part 1 DVD and Season 1, Part 2 DVD.

Carnage

Director Roman Polanski teams with playwright Yasmina Reza to adapt Reza’s Tony Award-winning play ‘Carnage,’ about four New York parents who gather for a civilized discussion that becomes anything but after their children get into a scuffle at a local park. Alan (Christoph Waltz) and Nancy (Kate Winslet) are the parents of Zachary, a young schoolboy whose recent fight with classmate Ethan resulted in two of Ethan’s teeth being broken. Convinced that they can find an amiable solution to the problem rather than dragging lawyers into the picture, Ethan’s parents Penelope (Jodie Foster) and Michael (John C. Reilly) invite Alan and Nancy to their home to discuss the matter in a comfortable setting. At first the conversation is cordial, with both sets of parents stating their own perspectives over coffee and dessert. But once the booze starts to flow and the guards come down, things begin to turn combative. As the evening wears on, both sets of parents are slinging venomous insults and engaging in underhanded behavior that makes their kids’ tooth-chipping tussle look like child’s play. Mystery Science Theater 3000

In ‘Girl in Gold Boots,’ the timeless tale of exploitation, competition, drugs and raw talent-flavored substitute, a young woman’s quest to make it as a professional go-go dancer reveals a devastatingly mediocre portrait of Hollywood’s low-budget underbelly. Thankfully, those schlock ’n’ roll stars aboard the Satellite of Love are here to avenge our boredom and riff our pain away. Comedy snipers Mike Nelson and his robot sidekicks Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot put Girl In Gold Boots in their crosshairs and take it down. May a statue be dedicated one day to their heroism. In 1966 an understandable attempt to capitalize on the popularity of Batman went horribly, horribly, horribly wrong. The movie that emerged, ‘The Wild World Of Bat Woman,’ would have stood a better chance had it been written by Bob Kane’s dog. There is a plot, of sorts, involving a masked babe, her team of dancing girls, a mad scientist, an atomic-powered hearing aid and an archvillain named Rat Fink. Don’t try to connect those dots. You’ll lose. Just enjoy the ample opportunities taken by Mike and his robot pals Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot to redeem the movie with barbs, cracks, digs, jabs and other assorted comic punishment.Buy the Wild World of Bat Woman DVD and Girl in Gold Boots DVD.

A man has to give up a life of lifting amps and chasing groupies to take on the challenges of the real world in the independent drama ‘Roadie.’ Jimmy Testagross (Ron Eldard) was a teenage rock & roll fan when he was growing up in Queens, and a couple years out of high school, he landed what seemed like the perfect job — joining the road crew of hard-rock icons Blue Oyster Cult. After spending 20 years on the road, Jimmy is cut loose when economics force the band to streamline their operation, and at the ripe old age of 40, he has no idea what to do with his life. Needing some time to regroup, Jimmy returns home to visit his elderly mother (Lois Smith), only to discover she’s growing senile and may need him to move in and look after her. As he struggles with the notion of facing adult responsibilities for the first time, he also crosses paths with Randy (Bobby Cannavale), who bullied him in high school and still acts like a spoiled brat, and Nikki (Jill Hennessy), Randy’s wife, who dated Jimmy in high school and is still holding on to a fading dream of making it as a singer/songwriter. Jill Hennessy, an accomplished musician as well as an actress, wrote the songs she performs in character in the film. Buy the Blu-ray right here.

Writer-director Gustavo Taretto’s charming feature debut ‘Sidewalls’ is a witty romantic comedy examining how the architecture of a city conditions the lives of two of its residents. Martin (Javier Drolas) and Mariana (Pilar Lopez de Ayala) live in the same apartment complex in bustling Buenos Aires, and they hurry about their lives unaware of each other. Both are young and beautiful – and emotionally damaged, but when they encounter each other by chance, the end of loneliness may be at hand. Paying unique homage to his home city by mixing animation, photography and graphic art, Taretto reflects on how urban chaos, as well as new technologies, can both unite and alienate people – and how two hearts destined for each other can find each other against all odds.
