In the premiere episode of “Touch,” child genius Jake (David Mazouz) divined Claire’s mom’s phone number with the help of some popcorn kernels. Moments later, to her astonishment, Claire’s phone began ringing with a call from that number. When she picked up, no one was on the line. Why? Did her mother hang up? Was her mother never there in the first place? And why did Claire seem so shocked to be hearing from her mom? All will be answered soon, promises series star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who plays Jake’s hard-nosed social worker on the Fox drama.
In the coming weeks, “We’re going to see a lot more about Claire’s mother and her past, which is relatively damaged [because] she came up through the foster homes and child services herself,” Mbatha-Raw says.
As it turns out, Claire and her mother haven’t been in touch for six years.”We discover that her mom’s actually schizophrenic and she’s lost track of her,” she divulges. “Claire doesn’t know if she’s alive, dead, or living on the streets. So there’s a very emotional storyline that comes in for her.”
Mbatha-Raw was less forthcoming when asked about the stage being set for a potential romance between Claire and Kiefer Sutherland’s character, Martin. “I can’t really tell you with any certainty that that’s definitely going to happen,” she says with a wink. When pressed about the obvious connection – and chemistry – Claire and Martin seem to share, Mbatha-Raw admits it’s still “a bit early days” in their new found friendship for anything to take shape, but she wouldn’t rule it out completely. “We’ll see!”
