NBC News is joining forces with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to help military veterans land jobs here at home.
More than a million veterans are unemployed, according to current figures, and the Chamber of Commerce has been trying to help out with a campaign called “Hiring Our Heroes,” which asks that potential employers around the country move qualified veterans to the top of their lists of candidates for available positions, in return for the sacrifices the vets and their families have made in the U.S. war efforts overseas.
And now, the Chamber’s program is getting a big shot in the arm from NBC News, which is featuring the “Hiring Our Heroes” program across all of its NBC network shows (“Today,” “Nightly News,” “Meet the Press,” “Rock Center,” “Dateline”) and the news channels it owns, MSNBC and CNBC.
The “NBC News: Hiring Our Heroes” program was announced Monday. There’s also a Spanish-language component, with NBC-owned Telemundo also participating. The campaign is also being promoted on various NBC-owned Web sites. (This Xfinity Web site, owned by NBC parent company Comcast, is part of the same corporate family.)

The series kicks off officially this Sunday, March 25, on “Sunday Today” and culiminates a few days later, on Wednesday (March 28) with a live Job Fair to be broadcast live on the “Today” show from the USS Intrepid on Manhattan’s West Side. More than 100 companies are expected to participate in the event. More information on that — particularly how vets can participate — can be found here.
Another highlight we’re looking forward to: Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw — who’s also the author of the influential book about World War II, “The Greatest Generation” — returning to NBC on Monday’s “Today” show to present a report on how U.S. veterans have fared throughout our history.
