‘As a world-renowned journalist, Barbara Walters has learned to appreciate the beauty of countless places, cultures, and people, but it’s on her home turf in America that there’s one thing she just can’t get behind: “The Bachelor.”
The “View” host began Tuesday’s show with a frank discussion with her co-hosts and “Bachelor” fans Sherri Shepherd and Elisabeth Hasselbeck, and it wasn’t pretty. Walters has, in the past, mentioned her distaste for the reality competition, calling it “a stupid show” and referring to Flajnik as “less than gorgeous,” but her thoughts about the show’s season finale made her previous remarks sound virtually like praise.
After Walters admitted to tuning in to last night’s episode, during which Ben Flajnik proposed to controversial contestant Courtney Robertson, she decided she could hold back no longer. “I am deeply offended,” said Walters, who accused Flajnik of not paying for the ring he proposed to Robertson with. “It’s such a crock.”
“I would have loved to have seen him fall off that cliff,” remarked co-host Joy Behar of Flajnik’s mountaintop proposal.
Added Walters, “I love ABC, I’m very happily employed, [but] I think this show is such a degradation to women… He’s just an ordinary guy with bad hair.”
Then, directing her attention to super-fan Hasselbeck, Walters quipped, “I don’t know how [your husband] Tim puts up with you.”
Hasselbeck, who admitted to spending a total of 529 hours watching “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” conceded to Walters in the end. “The show is really bad for our marriage,” she said.
