Sons of Anarchy” ended its fourth season with Jax (Charlie Hunnam) becoming president of the SAMCRO motorcycle club after spitting in former president Clay’s (Ron Perlman) face. The show’s creator, Kurt Sutter, told the audience at Wednesday’s PaleyFest, that the fifth season will begin production in late May, and will explore the impact of the regime change. “I always wanted to play this idea of putting Jax at the head of that [club] and the ripple effect of that on the guys and the loyalties and where people land. For me, the true dynamic to play out this season is seeing Jax at that table and the struggle that he has. Can you be the leader of an organized crime syndicate and not be a criminal? And if you choose not to become Clay, is he forced to suffer the same fate as John Teller? It’s the struggle for Jax between these two father figures and what kind of a person he becomes.”

On the red carpet prior to the event, Sutter exclusively discussed the arc for the dethroned, humiliated Clay with XfinityTV.com. “He will definitely be in that debilitated state physically and emotionally. We’re figuring out where he goes. Clay is a resilient guy. It’s just about where’s that resiliency going to take him?”

Sutter told the audience that Tara (Maggie Siff) will struggle with her new role as the president’s old lady. “The interesting thing for Tara this season, is that unlike previous seasons where the question is am I in or am I out, I think she’s clearly in. She really will be trying to figure out, Who am I in this world? Can I still be Doctor Tara Knowles and be the supportive queen [Jax needs]? We begin this season about a month after season four. So she has some time to process, but not a lot.”

Sutter has just begun writing the season five scripts. “In terms of story, the only thing I know that will definitely play out from last season is we introduce in name the character of [gangster] Damon Pope at the end of the season and [Tig] killing his daughter. That will basically be the adrenaline that gets season five started.”

Series star – and Sutter’s wife – Katey Sagal, has her own idea for what she would like to see happen in season five:  “I think Gemma should sit at the head of the table.”

Sutter also discussed the prequel to the FX drama that he would like to write. “I have this notion I really want to explore the First Nine, [the founder of SAMCRO.] It’s definitely out there. They’re definitely aware that I want to do it. I see it as a really different show. I see it as more of a political and historical show in terms of bouncing off everything that was going on in the sixties, Vietnam.” However, he made it clear that the prequel has not been greenlit yet. “There’s a lot of complications like licensing and all the things that go on with something that becomes Property Of. But I am definitely interested in doing it and the network is aware of that. I don’t know if we’ll explore it immediately after this show, or take a break and come back.”
