As it heads into its fourth season, “16 and Pregnant” is taking a different approach when it comes to casting.
MTV is reportedly looking for teens from a better background, because the show is looking for more “affluent” girls to feature, according to The New York Post.
“I think in the past, they were so concerned with getting drama that they chose a lot of girls that were complete train wrecks,” Ashley Majeski, a reality TV blogger who covers the show extensively, tells The Post.
Many of the girls from previous seasons have landed themselves in legal trouble/jail/rehab, etc. and the network wants to avoid that kind of backlash this time around.
“MTV received such criticism for last season’s girls — in addition to the legal drama of its ‘Teen Mom’ stars — that they purposely chose girls who wouldn’t make them look as bad,” Majeski adds.
The network is expected to release the names of the new season’s cast soon, as Season 4 begins later this month.
One of MTV’s most popular shows, “16 and Pregnant” averaged 2 million viewers last year.
