Both teams were sent home for 18 days, where they all had touching reunions with their family members who got their first glimpse of their loved ones’ transformations. But it wasn’t all hugs and happiness. There was work to be done, because the players were also imposed with the goal of losing five percent of their body weight before the next weigh-in. Those who met their goal were given automatic immunity and those who did not faced elimination.
While the majority of the Black and Red teams met their goals, it came down to the wire, with Chism needing to lose 12 pounds in order for the Black team to win the weigh-in. With the rest of his teammates securing immunity, if he didn’t make his weight, the 19-year-old would automatically be sent home. And after the requisite cut to commercial break cliffhanger before seeing his final number, it was revealed that Chism lost … 11 pounds. He missed the mark by just one pound! After posting solid numbers all season, nobody expected Chism to fail the challenge. Things got even more dramatic when his father, Mark, burst into tears and started freaking out. He made an impassioned plea to be sent home instead of his boy who needed to stay more than he did for health reasons, and later suggesting he would leave the show with his son. A stunned Chism didn’t know what to say but he was clearly disappointed in himself as he too began to cry. He eventually pulled it together and tells his pop to stay and pledges to stick with the program at home now that he believes in himself. Cue more tears.
Chism may have been abruptly eliminated on Tuesday night, but he did win something. The Texas teen won the episode’s rowing challenge, putting $10,000 in his pocket.
