“You got a new couch; you got two black girls,” Star Jones noted as she made her way back onto the set of “The View” after unceremoniously leaving the show six years before.
During the show’s ninth season, executives at parent network ABC had decided not to renew the host’s contract, although she was provided an opportunity to announce her departure in any manner she liked. The outspoken Jones decided rather to bluntly declare that she had been fired, an announcement that marked her last appearance on “The View” until Wednesday.
The host arrived on in a red dress, a show of support for the American Heart Association, and it wasn’t long before she and her former co-hosts were discussing her last appearance on the show.
“When your contract expired, a decision was made for various reasons not to renew,” Barbara Walters told Jones. “Your contract was not renewed, and Bill [Geddie] and I then said to you, ‘Look, you can do whatever you want… you can say you’ve got another assignment.’ You had said yes, you were going to do that. Instead, you surprised us on the air.”
“It was ugly,” responded Jones. “It was a bad emotional time. Nasty things were being said in the media…. I made the decision that I wanted to go out on my own terms. I wanted to be able to control it so that if I walked in here, if I were ever invited, I would feel good about coming in.”
“I finally get to thank this crew for walking me through after weight-loss surgery and protecting me and I never got to do that,” said Jones.
“We tried to protect you a lot when you were here,” interjected host Joy Behar. “We were told ‘Don’t say it was gastric bypass; say it was Pilates or whatever.”
“You did say that it was diet and Pilates… We did lie,” said Walters.
“I look good as Hell, don’t I?” said Jones. “Why do you care?”
While Jones refused to admit fault in her termination announcement, she finally found a way to leave the show that might still allow her an invitation back.
“Thank you for welcoming me back and making me feel at home,” said Jones. “Barbara Walters is the reason I do what I do and I thank you very much.”
