Dashing secret agent Shane Donovan is returning to “Days of Our Lives.”  Charles Shaughnessy is the latest former cast member returning to the soap. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shaughnessy will debut May 2, when Shane returns to Salem on ISA business. For those uninitiated, the ISA is an interpol like organization that investigates major crimes that span the globe.  Rumor has it that John (Drake Hogestyn) and Hope’s (Kristian Alfonso) current storyline, involving their secret marriage years ago in the fictional country of Alamainia, will involve the ISA.

Shaughnessy was one of DOOL’s biggest stars from 1984 to 1992. He appeared in a handful of DOOL episodes in 2002 and again in 2010, when Rafe (Galen Gering) found himself wrongly imprisoned with Shane. Since leaving DOOL, Shaughnessy starred in the hit sit-com “The Nanny” and had a recurring role on “Mad Men.”  The show has yet to release details about how long Shaughnessy will be with the show this time.

DOOL is in the midst of what it deems a reboot. The soap hopes to improve its low ratings and insure its longterm survival. Many stars including Hogestyn, Deidre Hall, Patrick Muldoon and Christie Clark have returned to the show. Lisa Rinna will reprise her role as Billie Reed in March.  Executive producer Greg Meng told The New York Times, “We realized we needed to take the show back to where it was. The show is about traditional Midwestern family values, and how they’re constantly tested. That doesn’t change.”
