The Miami Marlins Will Be Featured on Showtime’s ‘The Franchise’

Everything’s new for the Miami Marlins this year. The heretofore low-profile franchise — despite two championships, the Marlins are more known for mediocrity and low attendance than anything else — has a new name (“Miami” instead of “Florida”) new colorful uniforms, a brand-new stadium, a new manager (the bombastic Ozzie Guillen) and a whole bunch of new high-profile players.
Now they also have a new distraction: They’ll be the subject of the second season of Showtime’s behind-the-scenes documentary series “The Franchise.”
Showtime announced that shooting has already started on the show, which last season followed around the San Francisco Giants as they defended their 2010 World Series title. This year’s subject will be even more interesting, given all the money the Marlins have spent this season on free agents Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Heath Bell.
But the potential breakout star of this season might be Guillen. Anyone who saw MLB Network follow around the Chicago White Sox in “The Club” a couple of years ago knows that Guillen is about as entertaining a figure as there is in baseball, ready to drop an f-bomb at the drop of a glove. Imagine how much more entertaining he’ll be when his swearing isn’t bleeped. And watching Guillen deal with his new stars, the high expectations because of the new stadium and the signings, and problem-child/potential-superstar Hanley Ramirez will be fascinating to watch.
“As we continue to sprint toward Opening Night and our new ballpark, we cannot think of a better way to share this season’s excitement – both on and off the field – than with Showtime and MLB Productions,” said Marlins president David Samson in a press release. “With our recent relocation, re-branding and roster make-over, the time is perfect to have audiences around the country experience new Miami Marlins baseball.”
Of course, the Marlins should be careful about what they wish for: The Giants finished out of playoff contention last year. So while the cameras may not have been a distraction, they may not have helped much, either.
