Paul Wesley and Nina Dobrev in The Vampire Diaries (The CW)

Vampire Diaries” keeps finding ways to top itself. Tonight’s episode, “Dangerous Liasons” is a coming out party for the Originals. In the prior episode, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) discovered that his siblings had been undaggered and awakened and had an extremely awkward family reunion that was compounded by the arrival of his mother, Esther, The Original Witch (Alice Evans). This week, the family invites everyone who is anyone in Mystic Falls to a ball hosted by the First Mom herself. That’s just the beginning of an hour that features hoop skirts, waltzing, a couple of shocking couplings, and a twist that nobody will see coming.  Executive Producer Julie Plec describes it thusly, “Elena (Nina Dobrev] finds herself on the arm of two tuxedoed Salvatores. Klaus attempts a Cinderella seduction.  And the Original Mother reveals she has big plans in store for her beloved children.”

Plec revealed more information about the rest of the season. (Her spoiler-filled discussion of “Dangerous Liasons” will be posted tonight immediately after the episode airs on the West Coast.)

Jeremy Will Return

“I had calls from some casting director being like basically, ‘Do you realize that all of your actors’ representatives are putting them up for pilot season?’ And I said, ‘Oh that’s so tragic. They basically have hit the point where they don’t really know where this is going to go. So we may as well get our back up plan.’ We will see Jeremy [Steven R. McQueen] before the season is over.”

Katherine Will Not

“Homegirl’s MIA, man. She’s smarter than to get herself caught up in all this mess.”

The Failure of Alaric’s Life Saving Ring Will Put Him  in Jeopardy

“The very beginning of the season Bonnie [Kat Graham] realized that no great magic comes without a consequence and I don’t think that a magical eternity ring can be relied upon much longer. Much like the genie in the bottle, at a certain point it’s just not going to work anymore. So every time Alaric [Matt Davis] goes out to save the day to be Elena’s champion, every time Jeremy gets himself into trouble, there’s definitely a sense of the clock ticking a little bit on the effectiveness of that ring. And that’s going to be a big concern for this girl who has two very important people left in her life. Her new guardian, essentially, her mentor her friend, and her little brother and to recognize that it’s entirely possible that neither of them are safe anymore. That’s going to be a big deal for her.”

Meredith May Be A Longterm Resident of Mystic Falls

“The thing about Torrey DeVitto is she’s kind of one of the nicest people on the planet. She’s so pretty and so talented and whenever we watch the show, it’s like ‘Meredith is so pretty,’ and so, you know, usually there’s an end date when we create these characters. And Meredith has been ever evolving. We’ll see. [She could stick around] or she could die a horrific, violent and tragic death in episode 20.

There Will Be Even More Deaths of Beloved Characters

“I don’t know that you can be that certain about the fate of anybody. Certainly many of our characters are going to come face to face with their maker at some point before the season is over. The question is whether they meet and shake their hands or get dragged away with their maker is a whole other question. But there’s going to be a lot of moments where we’re not really sure who is safe and who made it through… But we don’t kill just because we feel like we should. But we also don’t let people live just because they’re part of the family. One of the great sad tragedies of our job is not being able to say, ‘Oh we love you and therefore you’ll be with us forever.’ But by no means is there a rule that in episode 22 we’re checking one of these guys off the list.”
