Former GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman returned to the spotlight as a guest on Tuesday’s “The Tonight Show,” where he was met by a quizzical Jay Leno who pined for a new Republican party.

“I can’t think of a more dangerous place to be on earth for a politician than between you and Chelsea (Handler),” Huntsman said to Leno, who also welcomed Handler to the stage earlier in the show.

Leno was vocalized his distaste that the party was narrowing in on social issues, and noted that while a moderate Republican candidate would be more likely to get elected, the party continued to entrench themselves with conservative social issues.

“When I was a kid, Republicans were about defense and fiscal responsibility,” said Leno. “Now it’s about, “A condom? Oh, my God, get that out of here.” I mean, when did it become the party of all these social issues?”

While Huntsman towed the line of the party, he noted that a third party might be a good idea for the country.

“The American people are going to get so fed up at some point,” he said. “They are going to say this ultra-right, ultra-left stuff has got to go. Maybe it is more than a two-part system that does the work of the American people.”

Leno responded that in his view, social conservatism displayed by the candidates wouldn’t help the party in future elections.

“It seems like a moderate Republican would win because people think ‘I like the business side’ but to me I couldn’t care less about social issues,” he stated. “I think gay people should be allowed to get married, do whatever we want but keep the banks strong, keep defense strong.”
