After dismissing reports that he and Paul Lieberstein, showrunner of “The Office”, were planning a Dwight Schrute-centric spin-off of the NBC comedy, Rainn Wilson has backtracked a bit, saying that “we’re mulling it over,” according to The Wrap.
When Giuliana Rancic spoke to Wilson on E!’s red carpet show at the SAG Awards (video is above), Wilson said that the prospect of a spin-off taking place at Schrute Farms would be “even more far-out and weird than ‘The Office’.” We contend that if Mose (Mike Schur) isn’t there, it won’t be weird enough.
Anyway, perhaps Wilson’s tweet to not believe what we read in the press is more about such a spin-off being ready for 2013. There is the matter of the contracts of Wilson and most of the rest of the “Office” cast expiring after this season, so that would have to be taken care of first.
Wilson did indicate jokingly to Rancic that a series starring Dwight would be tough to take because his character is so out there. So the mechanics of transitioning Dwight from silly supporting character to the show’s centerpiece will also be tough to accomplish. Either way, we’re expecting Wilson and Lieberstein to tease us with this for the next year at least. We can’t wait (and yes, we’re being sarcastic when we say that).
