When Herman Cain, who dropped out of the GOP presidential race before primary season started, got one percent of the South Carolina primary vote on Saturday, it was pretty easy to figure out how that happened: He got the Colbert Bump. Stephen Colbert and his SuperPAC encouraged voters that a vote for Cain was a vote for Colbert (Stephen couldn’t get on the ballot), plastering ads all over the state encouraging people to vote for the ex-pizza company CEO.

Last night on “The Colbert Report,” Colbert not only showed the rally that he threw in his home state — complete with Cain as a guest — but he also officially dropped out of the race, having proved his point about… something. It’s essentially about the absurdities of the SuperPAC system and campaign finances, but the whole Colbert/Cain thing has us flummoxed a bit.

Oh, and Colbert also contacted his pal Jon Stewart in order to complete the transfer of control of the SuperPAC and its money back to Colbert. One problem: Stewart didn’t want to give it back. He’s apparently drunk with the spending power the money brought, and he ran away from Colbert in a zeppelin that happened to contain his entire “Daily Show” studio.
