How does someone freely inhale cocaine in front of thousands of people without them ever knowing the difference? That answer may be best delivered by Steven Tyler, who visited “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to promote the return of “American Idol” on Wednesday night.
Tyler has been open with the media about his past additions, and told DeGeneres exactly how he was able to stay hyped throughout his shows.
“I – being the lead singer – could lean over and (use) a coca cola can dumped out, empty, dried out with a hair dryer with blow in the bottom with a straw in it,” he said before showing the audience how he would appear to take a drink from the can but would instead put the straw in his nose and sniff.
He ended up crediting the drug for some of the band’s success, noting that the rigors of touring would have been difficult for the group without the drug.
“I gotta tell ya if it wasn’t for cocaine, I don’t think the band would have played every state in the United States nine times in seven years,” he said to DeGeneres noting that “there was no MTV back then. Peruvian marching powder. It was like, ‘Iowa – three in a row? Give me that!”
He went on to note the consequences of the drug binges, which took out a bevy of his friends and peers. He told wannabe musicians that “there is no end to that. It’s death, jail, or insanity for real reals.”
“That place lost me my kids, a marriage, a band, a lot of things and it’s for real. That’s how dangerous that is. So, I take it serious.”
