Don’t count “Pan Am” out just yet. Despite rumors that ABC’s ready to wipe their hands of the freshman drama, ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee says it’s still “in contention” for renewal.
Lee addressed the show’s future during ABC’s executive session at TCA on Tuesday. He believes the 60′s era drama, which has taken a significant nose dive in the ratings since its fall premiere, still has a shot at succeeding. “I was really pleased that when we opened we really had an audience,” Lee said. “And I think we can start bringing an audience back.”
Lee said ABC will continue to air new episodes of the series until the end of February. A decision on its ultimate fate should come some time in May, if not earlier.
On the scheduling side, Lee said that new James Van Der Beek-starring comedy, “Don’t Trust the B in Apt. 23” will get a huge launch on Wednesday, April 11 behind “Modern Family.” (Don’t fret “Happy Endings” fans. “Endings” will have already wrapped Season 2 by then, Lee promised.) New Shonda Rhimes drama “Scandal” will also get a giant launch behind “Grey’s Anatomy” on Thursday, April 5. (“Private Practice” will have already wrapped by then as well.)
