One of the big mysteries of the ABC midseason schedule was why “Cougar Town” did not have a launch date for its third season, and why it got its episode order cut. But according to ABC entertainment president Paul Lee, the first part is not so much of a mystery: fans should expect the show back sometime in March…. if not sooner.

“We will give it a good launch pad,” said Lee during his executive session at the Television Critics press tour in Pasadena this morning; he reiterated his love for the show and the episodes they’ve produced this season.

The “launch pad” remark could be meant to imply that they’ll pair the show with “Dancing With The Stars,” but that’s just a guess. However, he did concede after the panel that the show could come back earlier, which would make sense, especially if “Work It” tanks in the Tuesday timeslot after “Last Man Standing.”

The show’s creators, Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel, have launched a series of off-the-grid viewing parties to get word of mouth out about the show; they also threw a party at the press tour last night that was not sanctioned by the network. For Lee, though, he appreciates these efforts, affectionately calling Lawrence a “pirate” of a showrunner.

“I used to be a pirate when I was a show runner, but now (as an executive) I’m the Navy. I say (that other showrunners) should take a leaf out of Lawrence’s book; he does a great job launching his show.”

If he could do it, Lee would bunch up “Cougar Town,” “Happy Endings” and “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23″ as a “group of young irreverent comedies together” (“young” being relative, considering the median age of the cast of “CT” is about 43). But for now, the fans of “CT” will be happy wherever it lands on the schedule.
