As you might expect, there wasn’t a ton of entertainment news over New Year’s weekend, but one piece of news came across our desks yesterday that was a bit of a surprise: According to executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, the results show for “So You Think You Can Dance” has been canceled.
Lythgoe mentioned this in a tweet on New Year’s Day: “#FOX have (sic) cancelled the results show so I will have to change the format of #SYTYCD. At least we have another season at the end of MAY. Don’t worry #SYTYCD fans. I’m thrilled we have a new series. We’ll do our best to find some great talent starting next week in Atlanta.”
On his Twitter feed, Lythgoe speculated that the results would just be shifted to the next week’s episode, which will give viewers a chance to vote as opposed to just having the judges vote. As most people who have seen super-padded results shows from “SYTYCD” and other performance competition shows can attest, the trade-off of waiting a week is worth it compared to the torture of having to sit through a results show, where the only thing interesting happens in the last thirty seconds.
According to EW, Fox hasn’t officially responded to Lythgoe’s public remarks, but considering Lythgoe is the man in charge of the show, his information would be pretty good. And for people who are dance fans, they can take that summer hour back and spend it outside in the nice weather. Or watch “America’s Got Talent.” The world is your oyster at that point, isn’t it?
