Breaking her own rule that “every fascinating person must be living,” Barbara Walters revealed former Apple CEO Steve Jobs as her No. 1 “Most Fascinating” person of the year Wednesday night.

Walters said that she “immediately” chose Jobs after he announced his retirement from Apple in August. Unfortunately, she was unable to interview Jobs due to his death in October.

“But we’re sticking with our choice,” Walters said before airing a segment highlighting his career achievements. “Rules were meant to be broken, and that’s certainly how Steve Jobs lived his life.” Walters credited Jobs with “seeing something we couldn’t” which “makes him the most fascinating person of 2011.”

Rounding out Walters’ 19th annual list were the Kardashians, Derek Jeter, “Modern Family” stars Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Simon Cowell, Katy Perry, Donald Trump, Pippa Middleton, Amanda Knox, and Herman Cain.
