In 1975, Ed Asner guested on the original “Hawaii Five-0″ as a entrepreneurial smuggler. Now, 36 years later, the television legend is going to be reprising the role in CBS’ current “Hawaii Five-0″ reboot, according to Deadline.

The reboot has been reluctant to acknowledge the history of the original series for the most part, but the episode where Asner will appear will wade into the deep end of the nostalgia pool, showing footage of the original episode Asner was on as smuggler August March. In the spring 2012 episode, however, March has been rehabilitated for years and will help the current Five-0 unit on a case.

By the way, we do appreciate Deadline reporter Nellie Andreeva‘s joke that Asner is “upgrading” his role from guesting to recurring in a “very unique” 36-year story arc. Well played, Deadline.
