‘Liars,’ ‘Men’ Rule Twitter’s 2011 Top Trends List

Twitter unveiled its annual list of top topics for the year, and naturally TV played a big role in what people were thinking and tweeting about in 2011, especially if it was about people named Spencer and Hanna.

In television, ABC Family’s teen drama “Pretty Little Liars” scored as the top topic in the category for the year, according to Twitter. Last year, the show – which averages far less viewers than hits from broadcast network counterparts – came in second.

Right behind “PLL” was CBS’s “Two and Half Men” which left fans with plenty to talk about in the past 12 months, ranging from Charlie Sheen’s public battles with the show to adding Ashton Kutcher as his replacement. Not so coincidently, Sheen ranked as Twitter’s most-talked about actor for 2011, while Kutcher came in eighth.

Rounding out the top five in the television category was Lifetime’s movie “The Craigslist Killer,The Golden Globes and The People’s Choice Awards.
