Nickelodeon is about to double down on “Fred.”

Deadline.com reports that Nickelodeon is expanding the franchise, with a third film on deck featuring the teen comic as well as a 20-episode series for the channel.

The character Fred is played by Lucas Cruikshank and was originally created in 2008 on YouTube as a fictional six-year-old with anger and home life issues. In recent movies, he appears as an awkward teen. After accruing an online audience and being featured in the channel’s heavyweight series “iCarly,” Nickelodeon launched “Fred: The Movie,” a year ago that was seen by 8.7 million viewers in its premiere. The second film, “Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred,” was seen by 5.7 million total viewers.

The website reports that the series is set to begin production at the end of the year and should premiere in early 2012. The third movie, meanwhile, will hit the channel later next year.
