Lady Gaga gave both ABC and Tony Bennett some holiday cheer over Thanksgiving.
The singer’s ABC holiday special “A Very Gaga Thanksgiving” delivered the channel with a satisfying ratings boost on Thursday. The telecast drew 5.5 million total viewers with a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49, to help the network to its best Thanksgiving ratings since 2007 and topping last year’s Beyonce music special by 1.3 million total viewers.
The special featured Gaga performing songs from her new album including “Marry the Night” and “Edge of Glory” as well as holiday staple “White Christmas.” She also sat down with Katie Couric at her former high school to talk about how her career and success has impacted her family.
But the segment that likely left the most eyebrows raised was her segment with Tony Bennett.
During the show, she told audiences that the iconic singer recently saw her sans clothing, as part of some pictures he was sketching for an upcoming issue of Vanity Fair. The experience, said Gaga, made the singer feel “shy.”
“I walked in and said, ‘Well Tony, here we are’ and I dropped my robe and I got into position,” the singer said during the special. “I felt shy and thought, ‘It’s Tony Bennett, why am I naked?’ ”
Gaga opened the 90-minute TV special with a duet with Bennett to “The Lady Is a Tramp.” For his part, Bennett proclaimed Gaga as one of the most creative artists he had ever met, likening her to another famous name.
“I think as time goes on she might become America’s Picasso,” he said.
