Jimmy Fallon turned in a stellar guest performance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” Thursday that had us thinking — again — that Fallon’s a shoo-in to take over “The Tonight Show” someday.

Even Jay Leno seemed in awe of Fallon’s talent as he watched in wonder as Jimmy demonstrated his talent for musical mimickry. Leno brought up the subject when he remarked on the notoriety of Fallon’s most recent impression — the late Jim Morrison singing the theme song to the PBS kids show “Reading Rainbow.”

Fallon performed that one recently on his own show — NBC’s “Late Night” — and Jay showed a clip Thursday on “Tonight.” But then Jimmy grabbed a guitar that had been conveniently stashed behind the guest couch and did two more.

They were two of his most famous impressions — Neil Young singing the theme song to “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and then Bob Dylan singing the theme to “Charles in Charge.”

You’ll see why Jay was so impressed if you watch the clip here:

Time after time, we just continue to be incredibly impressed by Fallon. The powers-that-be at NBC must be eyeing him to take over “The Tonight Show” someday. The timing is perfect: Now 37, we can easily envision Fallon hosting “The Tonight Show” throughout his 40s and 50s, and possibly longer.
