Also available in a freshly repackaged DVD edition, the cinematically sprawling and stunningly-restored film follows the life story of Jack Crabb (Hoffman), a white man raised by Native Americans, as he recounts, often comically, through flashbacks the many historic events he witnessed as the West was won as the bloody result of American imperialism and genocide of Native Americans. As a 20th-century historian (William Hickey) listens, 121-year-old Jack Crabb (Dustin Hoffman) narrates the story of being a white orphan adopted by the Cheyenne, renamed “Little Big Man,” and raised in the ways of the “Human Beings” by paternal father-figure Old Lodge Skins (Chief Dan George who received an Academy Award nomination). After being violently thrown back into the white world, Jack is preyed upon by a preacher’s wife (Faye Dunaway), tries to be a gunfighter under the tutelage of Wild Bill Hickok (Jeff Corey) and gets married. But when returned to the Cheyenne by chance, Jack prefers life as a Human Being. Unfortunately, that life was not to be. Jack is a witness to the Washita massacre and is the sole white survivor of the Little Big Horn, the fatal folly of egomaniacal General George A. Custer (Richard Mulligan).
