Could Stephen Colbert have a shot at hosting “Saturday Night Live“? Not if you take his interview with Seth Meyers on last night’s “Report” as an audition.

After several minutes of affectionately “hammering” the Weekend Update host-SNL headwriter about the goings-on at the sketch show, Colbert coyly remarked that he Meyers don’t run in the same circles.

“Maybe that’s the reason I’ve never been asked to host,” Colbert fished.

“Do you think you’d make a good host?” questioned Meyers. “You tell me. You’re the headwriter,” Colbert deadpanned. “Do you do characters?” asked Meyers.

What followed was Colbert’s hilariously terrible attempt at a Robert De Niro impression, which Meyers accurately described as a cross between De Niro and “The Pengiun.”¬† Watch their hysterical exchange below:
