UPDATED: Herman Cain is still on the schedule to be a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Monday night, an ABC spokesman said on Sunday. The booking of Cain — whose name turned up Friday on a “Kimmel” guest list for this week — raised some eyebrows because the Republican presidential hopeful has been thrown on the defensive during the past week over sexual harassment revelations. Skeptics wondered if Cain would make good on his “Kimmel” commitment because unpredictable Jimmy could put him on the spot with embarrassing questions about the allegations. “He’s still scheduled to appear,” the “Kimmel” rep said.

PREVIOUSLY: Beleaguered presidential candidate Herman Cain is on the guest lineup for Monday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” but will he show up?

The question is worth asking because the Republican has spent the past week trying to manage the growing storm over multiple sexual harassment accusations that threatens to derail his candidacy. That means he might not exactly be up for a light-hearted guest shot on a late-night comedy show.

Here’s the story — as it’s being reported and as we interpret it: On Saturday morning, the Associated Press reported that Cain will appear on the “Kimmel” show Monday night. Since we had seen no such announcement from ABC, we consulted a regular “listings” e-mail we get from ABC to see if there were any guest lineups for next week’s “Kimmel” shows.

And sure enough, buried in this innocuous “listings” rundown for next week, there was Herman Cain, listed as a guest for Monday night (Nov. 7), along with “Twilight” star Taylor Lautner and musical guest Junip.

These guest listings are often set up a few weeks in advance of their airdates. We can’t be sure of this, but we have a feeling this Cain appearance was scheduled before this sexual harassment firestorm began to engulf his campaign. Back then, with Cain’s candidacy flying high, booking an appearance on “Kimmel” probably looked like a good idea.

Now, though, it doesn’t seem appropriate at all. That’s why we’re skeptical that Cain will honor this commitment on Monday night. Of course, all of these “listings” announcements are “subject to change,” as ABC notes right up front on these press releases. Moreover, a check of Cain’s appearance schedule for next week — on his own Web site — reveals no mention of a “Kimmel” appearance on Monday. Stay tuned.

While we’re on the subject of Jimmy Kimmel, why not watch a “Kimmel” show right here?
