Today “American Idol’s” third season runner up Diana DeGarmo joins “The Young & the Restless” in the contract role of Angelina, a mobster’s daughter who dreams of being a singer. The character has been described as similar to the cast of “Jersey Shore,” with tacky clothes and an abrasive personality. DeGarmo told The Hollywood Reporter, “The wardrobe department and I have had a blast picking out outrageous and fabulous outfits for Angelina. Her hair and make-up are icing on the cake.”Angelina is the daughter of a minor recurring character on the show. Her character will likely interact with the character of Devon (Bryton James), a young music executive.

DeGarmo, who has starred in several Broadway shows, is the latest performer from outside the soap world to appear on daytime’s number one show. Film actor  Sean Patrick Flannery just completed a contract stint as a veterinarian. Tabloid regular Sean Young played a crazy woman who drove the show’s leading lady Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) to drink. Eric Roberts played a lawyer. “Brady Bunch” star Susan Olsen, “Father Knows Best” star Elinor Donahue and character actress Ellen Greene have guest starred. The show also hired two of “General Hospital’s” best known stars, Tristan Rogers and Genie Francis to play Cane’s (Daniel Goddard) parents. None of these characters have proved popular with viewers, who have viewed the newcomers as examples of stunt casting that are taking away focus from the characters that they have tuned in to watch. Most have already been written off the show. Will DeGarmo’s Angelina be the new character that the audience accepts? Is daytime hungry for a character who dresses like Snooki? Tune in and find out.
