As viewers have come to expect over the last couple of decades, the “Today” show went all out with their Halloween celebration this year, using last spring’s Royal Wedding as the theme for the costumes the anchors wore this year. But the appearance of someone who used to be an anchor there stole the show.
It stands to reason that the show’s anchors, Matt Lauer and Ann Curry, would play Prince William and Kate Middleton, respectively; sure enough, Matt wore the red military uniform William wore, and Ann emerged from a limo in a pretty good replica of Middleton’s lacy wedding gown. Al Roker, complete with red wig, played William’s grinning brother Harry, while Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford played the silly-hat wearing Princesses of York, Eugenie and Beatrice.
Meanwhile, new 9 am anchor Savannah Guthrie got the rookie hazing prize, having been given the task to somehow pull off playing Prince Charles, while new news anchor Natalie Morales had it easy; all she had to do was slip into a replica of Pippa Middleton‘s head-turning white bridesmaid dress. Considering Morales had to play Justin Bieber last year, she probably would have revolted if she had cross-dress once again.
But all eyes turned away from Curry, Lauer and company when Meredith Vieira, doing her best cartoonish British “Helloooo!”, entered the plaza dressed as Queen Elizbaeth in her frumpy finest, dogs in tow. Lauer grabbed her and did a spin-and-dip hug that was so hard, Vieira’s wig and hat almost fell off. Sure, Vieira was there to promote the new newsmagazine “Rock Center,” which debuts tonight. But it was interesting to see how warm of a welcome she got from the gang, even though Curry was supposed to be the center of attention.
So, what’s on tap for the gang next Halloween? Our guess would be something election related, but who knows?
In other Halloween costume news… “Live with Regis and Kelly” had their usual Halloween blowout… but no Regis! Kelly Ripa‘s co-host of the obviously pre-taped special was Nick Lachey, and aside from their take on the Royal Wedding, we saw the usual pop-culture-heavy costumes from the pair. The closest we came to a Regis sighting, though was when Heidi Klum came out dressed like the soon-to-be-departing host, which was unsettling but funny. According to Hal Boedeker of the Orlando Sentinel, Regis simply took the day off because, according to a rep for the show, the Halloween episode, with its many costume changes, has never been his favorite.
