Showtime has renewed hit CIA thriller “Homeland” for a second season.

The drama starring Claire Danes (Carrie Anderson) and Damian Lewis (Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody) debuted as the network’s highest-rated new drama of all time, attracting an audience of 4.4 million viewers across various platforms in its first week. Viewership has continued to increase week-over-week.

“‘Homeland’ is just getting started,” Showtime’s President of Entertainment David Nevins said via press release. “Clearly, the overall audience growth from week one to week four demonstrates that this show is hitting a nerve in the cultural zeitgeist. [Executive producers] Alex [Gansa] and Howard [Gordon] have created a psychological thriller that holds special relevance in the post 9/11 world. I’m quite confident that its passionate audience will be riveted as the season unfolds and people discover where this story is going.”

Production on Season 2 will begin in spring 2012.
